A famous Hollywood movie director promises his dying friend to direct a brand new film about Jesus, which turns out to become a major challenge regarding the obstinate main actor and the hair-raising situations everybody gets into while making the movie.
The newly wed young mexican couple Maria and José Salvatore are traversing the border to the U.S. They escape the police and make it to Interstate 405 with their old car heading towards Los Angeles. Suddenly Maria is in labor but the law enforcement cars are gaining on them - and so they don't dare to stop. Finally some Motorcycle-Rockers pass by them. One of them is a doctor. He becomes aware of the situation and leads the couple to a parking lot. There he helps the child to be born, while the other gang members protect the scene from the police.
25 years later. A terminally ill director in Hollywood asks his directing friend STEVEN to fulfill his last wish: to make a final and true movie about Jesus. Some months later Steven wants to start with the project. But none of the submitted scripts is convincing. Desperate he wants to give up when suddenly a man appears and introduces himself as JACOBUS. This man says he knows everything about his brother Jesus and can help make the movie really authentic. Jacobus »Jacob« gets the Job as an executive producer and director's assistant. The production company accepts him but demands that he cooperates with the local churches to make the movie as real as possible.
The casting becomes a huge difficulty. The churches suggest several Jesus actors, according to their view and beliefs. But none are acceptable to Jacob. One is too thin, the other looks too holy, the third has blue eyes and curly blond hair talking too softly. Jacob and Steven are desperate. While they are discussing the situation they accidentally watch a Coca-Cola Delivery Truck pull on to the premises. The driver, a well-built mexican man drags and carries the heavy boxes, every so often cursing and spitting. »I guess, this one is about right ...«, Jacobus exclaims happily. It is JOSHUA SALVATORE, the child of the mexican couple, who were helped by the rockers 25 years ago.
The shooting is about to begin. Joshua »Josh« Salvatore receives a crash course in acting in preparation for his role. He seems to be surprisingly talented. While the first scenes are shot, the co-creating churches cause all kinds of trouble, because Josh always sabotages their suggestions. Jacob tries to appease the quarrels, while Josh identifies more and more with his role. He gets pretty nasty in his outspoken truth telling. He says what he thinks and sees which leads to even more turmoil. When he finally steps over water, appeases a Tornado and gets one of the crew members out of his wheel chair, the media and the public start to notice him.
Finally he becomes world-famous through a talk show, when he truthfully addresses corruption, mismanagement and hypocrisy taking a stand for altruism and love for one's neighbor. He comes under fire from certain segments of the population, the pope included, who do not want him to go on. They forge a plan to silence him. When the table dancer Madeleine is found dead in his apartment he is accused of murder, convicted and sentenced to death penalty. Again the rockers are helpful. This time, they act as his faithful disciples.
